“Consider the avocado. Its disproportionate half-moon shell is even shaped like an ovary. The creamy flesh shelters a single seed. This is the very definition of ‘fruit’.”

Obdurate and nine, he replies, “Get off your high horse, Mom. Fruit is sweet.”

Mom protests, “Not all fruit. Not tomatoes…”

“Tomatoes aren’t fruit.”

“Yes they … look, we’ll Google it together.”

He says, “I don’t want to Google it.”

“Look at this page,” she says. “It explains vegetables can be fruits, but fruits can’t be vegetables.”

“That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”

“Just eat your lunch, Jeremy.”

“I don’t like avocados.”

I don’t think that this Mom is going to get her son to have faith that avocados are tasty. But I have faith that you’ll love Lance’s 100 word song meme! Go visit him here and add your own entry!

    • So do I, actually, but not in the same way as other fruits. I saw a thing on Pinterest that said something like "smart is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wise is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad"

Other than the Google bit, this could have been my Mom and I at age 9. She wanted so badly to expand my palate. I hated vegetables (and a tomato was NOT a fruit on my books, let alone a slimy green avocado.) We later learned I'm allergic to the acid in tomatoes. It gives me a rather uncomfortable skin rash.

Which makes it exquisitely vile that when I was pregnant with Sam I CRAVED tomatoes. My shoulders were rashy one week out of every four that pregnancy, because I couldn't stop eating them. And I haven't lost the taste for them either. Mom won me over on the avocadoes when I was about fifteen. She got me on the tomatoes when I had my second child.

And as for things one wouldn't expect in a fruit Salad? Grapefruit and Avocado Salad with lettuce and light Italian dressing? To Die For.

  1. I enjoyed the natural banter that maneuvered its way into entertainment. You accomplished a lot in such a short spritz of words Jester.

    • Thanks k~ I was picturing Mom as having this glorious speech about the avocado and its virtues that the son just cuts through like acid.

    • I've had that first sentence in my head for DAYS now. I had to find a way to make it sound less pretentious than it really is, though, before I could post it!

  2. I was pretty sure that the reason my kids used not to like avocado was a texture thing (too slimy) – I made a rough type of guacamole instead (low on raw onions and chili but high on tomatoes) and used yesterday's baguette, sliced, brushed with olive oil and baked before being quickly rubbed with garlic as a vehicule.

    It might work!

  3. Have you tried just feeding it to him, mixed in with something else and letting him know afterwards it was an avocado?

    • I get the impression this Mom wouldn't. As for me in real life, my kids are so taste and texture sensitve that it's hard to put anything past them.

We discovered quite by accident that our daughter liked vienna sausages (ick), and we tricked her into eating meat for over a year by calling it sausage and gradually letting on to what she really had just consumed. But I used a different taco seasoning powder last night, and she reacted like it was arsenic.

  4. Have you put a tape recorder in our kitchen? I like the natural diagloue and love the last two lines.

Thanks for continuing to play 100 word song with me, jester.

    • I'd love to be able to spy on people like that. Glad I'm 'keeping it real' 🙂

  5. I could have the same conversation with my son. There is no reasoning with him.

    • It's weird for me to remember having conversations like that with my own Mom, and to remember my thinking at the time and to simultaneously be holding up my Mom's end of the piece with my own urchins.

    • I would have for much of my life. As an adult, I have a lot of sympathy for that kid, and I don't force feed my kids much that I know they think is gross. Try it? yes. But I trust them to know their own tastes and be maybe willing to come back to stuff in a few years.
