Wizard’s dilemma

Over at this week’s Trifextra writing challenge, we are to complete in our own 33 words (the second part of the story below for me) the story the editors have begun with their 33 words (the first part of the story below for me)

“There’s nothing cute about it,” he said. The register of his voice indicated decision more so than discussion.

She disagreed heartily and privately, staring past his head and out the window behind him.

She exclaimed,  “They’re tiny! The child wouldn’t come without her familiar; the cat wouldn’t leave its kits; and I had only the demon box to hold them.”

He said, “The demons are allergic.”

  1. I guess all the warm fuzzy feelings from the cuteness of the kittens would be would be utterly undone by the results of a demonic allergic reaction… 🙂

    • I so badly wanted to include the part inbetween her protest and his explanation when the demon arose from the box sneezing wildly. But I had not enough words. Sigh.

    • Yeah, she didn't see much point to defending her opinion that they were very cute. But she did feel like he could at least excuse the behavior in light of the necessary task she accomplished. They've been working on this kid for weeks.

    • And you can't even tell them "God bless you" or even "Bless you", because you'll scald them with your words, and you aren't likely to get much work out of a demon you've scalded.

However, the wizard here is about to find out that demons who want fast release act quickly. He might have a change of heart about putting kitties in his demon boxes in the future.

    • They are always making everything more difficult. Quite frankly, if these two didn't absolutely need one to cast this spell, the man would be inclined to scrub the box out and wait to cast it.

    • You'd be surprised at the number of awkward problems our world has caused in the next dimension. Just think how uncomfortable it gets for an immortal creature to catch bubonic plague!

    • Oh you can't imagine what it's like for them to be conjured in spring. The pollen! Cat dander has nothing on a nice blooming flower.

    • Such tiny things, but they do attract those terrible little mites, and no magic yet cast has created a remedy for demon allergies. I suppose one could put a decongestant in the circle before beginning to conjure, but I'm not sure I want to see a demon hyped up on pseudoephedrine!

    • Yes. He's quite vexed with his apprentice. Although he's grateful she got the girl out of the street, the cat infestation is another issue entirely, and nothing whatsoever cute about it.

    • Yes, but I'm not sure I'd trust a demon with a needle, even inside a flawless chalk circle.

  2. How creative of you to convey an everyday reality (for those with cat allergies) into a fantasy. 🙂

If I had not read the other comments, I would not have understood kittens and allergies. My excuse is, I do not have a cat. 😉

  3. Can demons take Claritin?

🙂 Came from the Trifextra linkup.

    • As long as you put it in the box before you drew your chalk circle, it could probably take it. But then there's the question of if it would cure allergies or cause some really awkward side effects to the spell and unbalance everything. These things, as we all know, must be done delicately.

    • Thanks Karen. I know what you mean .I don't look at anybody's until I write mine. So often, our brains all head to the same place anyway, I feel better if I came to mine without 'peeking'!

  4. Ha! I loved it. What a great image – allergy-wracked demons. 🙂

    • *Kersniffle* It's a whole different world from theirs. Half the reason wizards need that chalk circle is to protect the demons from all the various issues we bring them in.
